Christopher Grimes Projects is pleased to announce our representation of Roxy Paine.

Throughout his career, Roxy Paine has been developing two seemingly separate and distinct bodies of work: one manmade, yet organic and based in nature, and the other machine produced and grounded in techno- logy. While visually very different, both his machines and his natural worlds are created on a consistent conceptual foundation.

In Paine’s nature-oriented work, the artist functions as a machine, mechanically producing one object/species after another. These faux botanical works are so compelling in their trompe l'oeil illusion that they cause the viewer to question the distinction between image and reality.

These are methods of mechanical intervention that Paine has employed in his investigation of the boundaries that define the limits between man and nature. He subverts the viewer's expectations and forces us to question our perceptions of knowledge and creation. The cycle of his creative conception stimulates a continuous string of questions on the very basis of mechanical, natural, and human creation and the relationships between man, machine, and nature.
