KQED Presents Outside In: A Communal Listening Series featuring Bill fontana
January 1, 2021
Every Thursday evening starting in December, the World According to Sound will live stream spatialized audio straight to the headphones of people listening together, all around the world. Every attendee will be mailed an eye mask and listening instructions for how to tune into a program made by radio producers, musicians, and sound artists. After each show, we’ll have a live discussion with the people who made the audio. The programs feature sound and music from the likes of the Kronos Quartet, Matmos, and Bill Fontana, along with sound artists and radio producers like Chris Hoff and KQED's Sam Harnett. Tickets must be ordered one week before the show to receive an eyemask and program.
Fontana, a pioneer in sound-sculptured sensoria will present a sonic retrospective spanning the expanse of his career. From the sonic landscape of Australia during a solar eclipse to the foghorns of San Francisco Bay and the Acqua Vergine aqueducts underneath Rome–through Bill’s career, we get an experiential education in sound recording, projection, and listening. Following the performance will be a live Q&A with Fontana.
